FIRST AID

What to do in a dental emergency

These simple dental care steps can ease pain and protect your tooth while you make your way to us.

Knocked-out tooth

01

Hold it by the crown, not the root. Gently place it back in the socket and bite on a clean cloth. If you cannot, keep it in milk and come to us straight away.

Toothache

02

Rinse with warm salty water and take over-the-counter painkillers as directed. Avoid very hot, cold or sugary foods until we see you.

Broken or chipped tooth

03

Save any pieces, rinse your mouth with warm water, and use a cold compress on the outside of the cheek to reduce swelling.

Swelling or abscess

04

Do not apply heat. Call us the same day. If swelling spreads towards your eye or throat, or affects breathing or swallowing, go to A&E.

FAQ

Emergency dentist Chelmsford: your questions answered

We keep same-day emergency slots reserved every weekday for patients in Chelmsford and across Essex. Call first thing on 01245 822 892 and, wherever possible, we will see you the same day to relieve your pain.

Severe toothache, broken or chipped teeth, knocked-out teeth, lost fillings or crowns, swelling, abscesses and bleeding that will not stop all count as dental emergencies. If pain is stopping you sleeping, eating or working, do not wait — call us and we will help you decide.

The cost depends on the treatment you need. We will always examine you first, explain your options and agree a clear breakdown with you before any treatment starts — no surprises. Call us or see our Pricing & Fees page for details.

Yes. You do not need to be registered with us — new and non-registered patients from Chelmsford and across Essex are welcome for emergency appointments.

Hold the tooth by the crown, not the root. If you can, place it gently back into the socket and bite on a clean cloth; otherwise keep it in milk and call us immediately. A knocked-out adult tooth can often be saved if treated quickly.

Our emergency slots run during normal opening hours, Monday to Friday. If you need urgent help when we are closed, call NHS 111 for out-of-hours advice, then book with us first thing the next working day.
